Bystander Intervention

Tools Used: Vyond, Articulate Storyline, Articulate Rise

This project was developed for Phelps Health and has been given permission to be shared in this portfolio.

Problem and Solution

When Phelps Health got a new CEO in 2021, the CEO began re-writing many hospital policies. One of these new policies was “Zero Tolerance”. I was then tasked by the CEO to create educational materials for the organization. In speaking with the policymakers, it seemed as though “Zero Tolerance” was difficult to define.

I collaborated with the Director of Organizational Development and Learning to analyze the actions the organization is asking of its staff and began research on bystander intervention. The four d’s of bystander intervention: distract, direct, delegate, and dialogue have since been adopted by Phelps Health.

Process

Once research was completed, I began creating a bystander intervention video in Vyond. I used the text-to-speech narration in Vyond. Since Vyond requires the audio to be assigned to a character, I created a character off-screen to narrate.

With the video complete, I began iteration on the rest of the module. Bystander Intervention has this message: do something. But every person and situation is different. While looking at the four d’s of bystander intervention, I had an idea for a scenario-based quiz. As someone that LOVES taking absurd Buzzfeed quizzes such as “Which Type of Bread Are You?”, I wanted to create a “Which Type of Bystander Are You?” quiz.

Writing

As the first and only instructional designer for the hospital, I’ve been putting in the effort to collaborate with other departments to give visibility to my role and department. I reached out to the copywriter in the Marketing department to help me write the scenarios and answer choices for the quiz. This has since opened the door for other people in my department to seek help from Marketing.

Development

After analyzing the sensitivity of the scenarios, I decided to create a second quiz and put a trigger warning at the beginning. I developed the quizzes in Articulate Storyline 360.

The Math

To calculate the answer choices to get the result, I used number variables and triggers to add 1 to each of the user’s answer selections.

Number variables

Addition triggers

Each quiz has seven questions and four answer choices that correspond with the four d’s of bystander intervention. Because of this, I had to write out every possible answer choice, taking into account all the possibilities of a tie. I accomplished this by using triggers and layers.

In true Buzzfeed quiz fashion, I wanted each of the 10 possible answer choices to have a personality description. For each of the 10 bystander personality types, I wrote unique personality descriptions, an explanation of how the user’s bystander personality type adds value to the organization, and some encouragement since intervening can be extremely difficult for some people.

Final Touches

I then reached out to a graphic designer in the Marketing department to design badges for the answer choices before adding the Vyond video and Articulate Storyline quiz in an Articulate Rise module.
